Political, civil society leaders meet at Abdur Rob's home

Update : 29 Jul 2017, 09:44 AM
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rob hosted a dinner for leaders of several political parties and civil society representatives, reportedly discussing the possibilities of forming a political alliance. Police barged into Rob's Uttara home during the meeting but were turned back after the host told them it was a social gathering. On Thursday evening, around 15 politicians and other personalities attended a dinner at Rob's home. Sources there said Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and Joint Secretary General Mahi B Chowdhury, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) General Secretary Khalequzzaman, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Saiful Haque from Ganatantrik Bam Morcha, JSD leaders and Krishak Sramik Janata League leaders were present. Citizens for Good Governance (Shujan) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder was also present. The sources said Communist Party of Bangladesh President Mujahidul Islam Selim, Gono Forum President Kamal Hossain and Gana Shanghati Andolan Coordinator Junaid Saki were invited to the event but did not attend. Gono Forum leader Subrata Chowdhury was present. These progressive and leftist parties who are not with either of the two major political alliances have been talking about forming an alliance for some time. Mahmudur Rahman Manna told Bangla Tribune that many who had been invited to the dinner did not come. “We talked about the current political scenario. We have been talking about an alternative political alliance for some time and our discussion this evening was positive,” he said. The former Awami League leader said the parties invited were trying to identify common goals and interests. Subrata Showdhury said the conversation was focused on forming an active political alliance that could present itself as an alternative to the two major alliances. “All leaders present agreed that an alliance was a crucial need at this time, considering how much the public resents the government,” he said.
