The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police on Friday arrested Chhatra League Faridpur unit President Nisan Mahmood Shamim on charges of money laundering in Dhaka.
Nisan had been on the run for the past few days.
With Nisan’s arrest, CID has now arrested nine leaders of Faridpur Awami League and its associate bodies in connection with a Tk2000 crore money laundering case filed with Kafrul police station in Dhaka.
Investigation officer of the case and CID Assistant Superintendent of Police Uttam Kumar Biswash said Nisan was arrested from the Uttara area of the capital in a drive by a CID Dhaka metro (west) team on Friday afternoon.
The CID team conducted the drive after receiving a tip-off.
CID sources said eight of the accused were arrested by local police in Faridpur, who then handed them over to CID.
So far, two of the accused have given confessional statements before a Dhaka court, the sources added.
Earlier on June 26, CID lodged the case with Kafrul police station against Sazzad Hossain Barkat, recently sacked Faridpur municipal unit Awami League general secretary, and his brother Imtiaz Hasan Rubel.
The siblings were later arrested and gave confessional statements before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on July 24, following interrogation in police custody for three days.
CID said the brothers were brought to Dhaka on July 18 and are now in Dhaka Central Jail. The other arrests were made based on their confessions.
Police said the arrested leaders used their clout with senior politicians of the district to carry out extortion, land grabbing and other criminal activities.
