BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the budget targets the next election and will not do any good for the people.
Fakhrul made the statement while distributing clothes among poor people at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka to mark BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s 36th death anniversary on Thursday.
He said it is impossible to implement a budget given in political interest.
“This government is using the budget politically keeping the election in mind,” he said.
“Health and education sector's condition is not good. We want to see how much allocation is made in those sectors.”
Fakhrul also raised a question about the legitimacy of the budget presentation, saying the government was not elected by people's votes.
He also said: “The finance minister himself says that the final budget is risky. But the question is that do they have the legality to place the budget?”
Referring to the latest implementation figures, Mirza Fakhrul said: “You have noticed that the implementation process in the banking system, share market and the ADP is not finalised. A few days ago we saw reports that 55% to 60% of last year's budget has not been implemented till now. So what can be the reason for this big budget?”
At the same time, there was massive corruption in power plants, the BNP spokesperson said.
“There is no accountability, no tender – these are the issues.”
“If there is a huge deficit in the coming budget, then how much public welfare is actually possible?” he said.
“It's not just hard, it's impossible,” he added.
