Dhaka South City Corporation’s Mayor-elect, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, said he would fulfil his election pledges in earnest after taking the oath of office.

He made the statement addressing reporters in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial on Dhanmondi Road 32 on Sunday afternoon, after placing wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Other Awami League leaders and activists were also present.

Taposh said: “Though I don’t have a magic wand, I will fulfil my election pledges.”

“I urge the outgoing mayor to take necessary measures to control the mosquito menace before July (when the problem deepens),” he added.

Taposh is likely to take office in May.

Regarding the percentage of voters in the city polls, Taposh said: “Though the voter turnout was low in percentage, it is still accepted as a fair and credible election by the world.”

Awami League backed mayoral candidate Taposh bagged 424,595 votes, while Bangladesh National Party backed mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain got 236,512 votes in the February 1 elections.

On December 29th, 2019, Taposh resigned from his post as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Dhaka 10 constituency after being selected as Awami League's mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation.
