Dr Kamal to stand in court for Khaleda’s bail if needed

Denying bail to BNP chief violates constitution, says Dr Kamal

Jatiya Oikya Front Convener Dr Kamal Hossain has said he will stand for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail in court, if necessary.

”I will stand in court on behalf of Khaleda for bail, if needed, as it is my professional responsibility,” he said.

Dr Kamal, also president of Gono Forum, made the remarks talking to reporters after Oikya Front’s steering committee meeting at his Motijheel chamber in Dhaka, on Tuesday.

The noted jurist said Khaleda can file an appeal again for her bail, though the Appellate Division rejected her bail petition on December 12 last year. “We can seek a review and a fresh application can be filed.”

Issuing a warning that the government will be held fully responsible if anything bad happens to the BNP chief, Dr Kamal demanded the government take the necessary steps for Khaleda’s advanced treatment, reports UNB.

He said they came to know from media reports that former Khaleda Zia has been in jail with serious illness.

“On behalf of Jatiya Oikya Front, we express our deep concern regarding her seriously deteriorating health condition. We also condemn the delay in granting bail to Khaleda Zia,” he said.

Dr Kamal said depriving the BNP chief of her rights to get bail is of course an act of violation of the constitution. “If our demand for her advanced treatment is not accepted, it will also be tantamount to a violation of the constitution.”

He said the constitution is the highest law and all are bound to obey it. “They (govt) will be accused of a serious offence if they violate the constitution.”

Replying to a query from reporters, the Oikya Front chief said he and their alliance leaders will continue their efforts to ensure bail for Khaleda.

Earlier, on Monday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said their chairperson informed them that she wants to go to any advanced health centre as she is not given proper treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

Khaleda has been in jail since she was convicted in the   Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in February, 2018. She was found guilty in another corruption case later the same year, though her party claims both cases were politically motivated.

The BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the BSMMU since April, 2019.
