Taking a swipe at BNP leaders for terming the ongoing anti-corruption drive as "eyewash", Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said time will tell whether it is eyewash or anything else.
“They keep calling it as eyewash," she said. "I say: wait and watch, and you will see whether it is eyewash or anything else."
The prime minister made the comments while replying to a question posed by reporters at a press conference, arranged at her official residence Ganabhaban, on her Azerbaijan tour for attending the 18th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), reports UNB.
Sheikh Hasina said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son – who are among the key corrupt individuals in this country – have already received their punishment.
“The two (Khaleda and her son Tarique), who are among the real corrupted people, have already got their punishment,” the prime minister said.
She said BNP also has other leaders who are mostly corrupt, involved in arson violence, killing people and many other crimes.
“All will have to face punishment in phases…you will have to wait for that. They must get it [punishment]. There is no doubt about it,” she said.
Hasina said she does not extend any favour to her party people in the ongoing anti-corruption drive; rather, those involved in the crime world are being caught.
Replying to another query, the prime minister said BNP is a den of corruption, and questioned the party's capacity to comment on any issue.
“How dare they?” she said.
In response to another question, Sheikh Hasina said only time will tell whether the anti-corruption drives would be expanded to catch people outside her party.
The government is not caging criminals through any particular selection; rather it is netting whoever is found engaged in offences.
“Criminals are criminals. They do not belong to any party. Whoever commits crimes would be caught,” she said.
