Taking a swipe at BNP's Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader threw an open challenge at its political opposition to take to the streets, if they can.
"BNP has been talking about movements. If they have the ability and courage, they should take to the streets first," he said at Awami League chief's political office in Dhanmondi.
In the last decade, the BNP failed to put up even a 10-minute demonstration, the Awami League leader said.
Fakhrul on Friday said that they would intensify their movement to free BNP chief Khaleda Zia from jail, and “restore” democracy.
Quader said: “The BNP's so-called movement for democracy was fraught with contradictions. Mirza Fakhrul himself did not join the parliament after winning in his constituency, but announced his candidacy for re-election.
“What sort of democracy is this?"
The ruling party leader noted: “Five BNP MPs, and the reserved seat MP joined the parliament, but the party's secretary general did not. This is ridiculous."
Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, among others, were present.
