AL candidate sweeps Gaibandha 1 by-polls

Awami League-blessed Golam Mostafa Ahmed has unofficially won the by-polls to the Gaibandha 1 constituency that was left vacant by the murder of Awami League lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton in December. The voting began on Wednesday around 8am and continued till 4pm. Mostafa bagged 90,169 votes in the election to defeat his nearest candidate Jatiya Party-backed Shamim Haider Patwari who polled 60,100 votes, said Returning Officer GM Shahatab Uddin. Some 1,66,618 out of the constituency’s 3,33,426 voters cast their ballots in the polls. The returning officer said 109 presiding officers, 637 assistant presiding officers and 1,274 polling agents carried out their duties at different polling centres. Eight platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh, 16 units of Rapid Action Battalion, and 4,000 Police and Ansar members were deployed across the constituency.
