Jatiya Oikya Front has asked for the unconditional release of ex-lawmaker Monirul Haque Chowdhury, one of the coordinators of the party.

They raised the demand in a meeting held at 12pm in its temporary headquarters in Eden Complex in the Arambagh area of Motijheel, on Monday.

The front, in the meeting, condemned the arrest of Monirul, also a former MP and adviser to BNP Chief Khaleda Zia, and asked for his immediate release.

Monirul was sent to jail on October 24 in a case filed over the bus arson attack in Comilla on February 3, 2015.

Six senior BNP leaders, including Chairperson Khaleda Zia, were accused in the case. Among the accused, three died and five were discharged.

The meeting also called for the Jatiya Oikya Front members to form their own coordination committees in all districts and metropolitans.

Presided over by senior leader of Oikya Front and General Secretary of Jasad Abdul Malek Ratan, the meeting was also attended by BNP Joint Secretary General Barkatullah Bulu, BNP Vice-Chairman Md Shahjahan, Zoglul Haider Afrik, AOM Shafiq Ullah, Moshtak Ahmed, Shahiduddin Mahmud Shwapan, Shahidullah Kaiser, Mominul Islam and Dr Zahed-ur-Rahman.

Earlier, Dr Kamal Hossain-led Oikya Front announced its decision to hold a rally in Dhaka on Friday, November 2, to push for the realization of its seven-point demand- including holding the next election under a non-party government.

The decision came from a press conference held at BNP's Naya Paltan central office on Monday.

The Oikya Front previously held two public rallies, in Sylhet and Chittagong, on October 24 and 27 respectively.

On Sunday, Dr Kamal sent a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asking for a discussion regarding the upcoming 11th national election.

The Oikya Front sent another letter to the Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader urging the ruling party to engage in dialogue ahead of the election.
