BNP: Mainul, Zafrullah being harassed for Oikya Front ties

Former caretaker government adviser Mainul Hosein was arrested on Monday night

Update : 23 Oct 2018, 01:50 PM

BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu has alleged that Barrister Mainul Hosein has been arrested because of his involvement in the Jatiya Oikya Front.

“Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury is also facing harassment for the same reason. The government is now trying to break our alliance,” he told a discussion organized by a pro-BNP platform at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Shamsuzzaman’s remarks came after a Dhaka court rejected former caretaker government adviser Mainul’s bail petition and sent him to jail in a defamation case filed over his verbal abuse of a female journalist on a TV talk show.

A total of nine cases, including the one on which he was arrested on Monday, in different districts so far have also been started against Mainul since the incident last week.

Gonoshasthaya Kendra Founder Dr Zafrullah, however, in the past few days was accused in a number of cases filed over various charges including extortion, vandalism and illegal occupation of land.

Last week, he was also accused in a sedition case after making false statements regarding the current chief of staff of Bangladesh Army.

BNP leader Shamsuzzaman said: “The government wants to set up an election without BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Both the national and international community will not accept this election.

“For ensuring a level playing field, the government must release our chairperson and other leaders and activists.”

Addressing the discussion, BNP National Executive Committee’s Assistant Organizing Secretary Shohidul Islam Babul said that there were no rule of law, democracy and human rights in Bangladesh now.

“Only Khaleda Zia protested against this autocratic government and that is why they put her in jail.”

He claimed: “In 2014, the Awami League government had arranged a fixed election; but this time we will not allow them to do it again. People from all over the spectrum are joining BNP. That is why the government has started fearing the Oikya Front.”

Mainul and Zafrullah both were involved in the process of forming Jatiya Oikya Front, an alliance of BNP, Gono Forum, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) and Nagorik Oikya that is led eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain, launched on October 13.
