The Jatiya Oikya Front has once again been denied permission to hold a rally in Sylhet on security grounds.

A seven member team from the Sylhet unit of BNP submitted an application to Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Additional Commissioner Poritosh Ghose on Saturday, seeking permission to hold a rally in the Registry Maath area of Sylhet city on October 24.

Oikya Front had originally wished to hold the rally in the Bandarbazar area of Sylhet on October 23, but shifted the program to October 24 after being denied permission on security grounds.

However, about an hour after Saturday’s meeting with the SMP additional commissioner, Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Selim Miah contacted Sylhet district BNP Secretary Ali Ahmed over the phone, and informed him that permission to hold the rally had again been denied, Oikya Front Co-ordinatior and Sylhet district BNP president Abul Khaher Choudhury Shamim said.

When contacted, the Kotwali police station OC said permission for the rally was once again not granted on security grounds but refused to elaborate.
