Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has asked party leaders and activists to be alert, saying that the BNP and its allies will try to create anarchy in the country as they have failed to initiate a strong political movement.
His remarks came on Monday during a rally in Dhaka’s Gulshan area, which is part of a week-long nationwide election campaign.
He also said: “People of the country need to be wary of the intentions of the BNP as well as their associates; so that they can help our leaders prevent any such acts.”
Speaking about the publicity campaign, he said: “We are beginning our campaign today. There are no other candidates. The only candidate is boat. I implore political leaders not to organize rallies with paid participants to impress cameras.”
“We will not enter into a skirmish with anyone, but if BNP and Jamaat try to disrupt our proceedings, we will repel them with the help of the government,” said Obaidul, also the road transport and bridges minister.
“Our goal is to ensure the safety of the people, and bring victory to Awami League and Sheikh Hasina in December’s elections,” he said.
Regarding BNP’s 7-point demand, the Awami League leader said: “These demands are unrealistic and illogical, and some of them go against the constitution. If they were in power and we made those demands, would they ever accept them? The election schedule will be out in one month, and their demands will become completely unfeasible,” Obaidul said.
“They only made the demands to make their leaders feel like the party was active,” he added.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Dipu Moni led the publicity campaign.
