BNP’s Standing Committee member, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, said on Thursday that a group of law enforcement agency members with the help of the Election Commission (EC) carried out 'election work' in favour of Awami League in the recent Gazipur and Khulna city polls.
"Awami League leaders and activists now do not need to carry out election work as members of law enforcement agencies are doing that for them. They pulled it off during the Khulna and Gazipur mayoral polls with the help of the Election Commission," he said.
The BNP leader came up with the allegation at a discussion arranged by Nagorik Odhikar Andolon at the Jatiya Press Club.
Khosru also said that journalists were obstructed from presenting the truth of the Gazipur polls held Tuesday.
"They (the Awami League-led government) now want to destroy the fourth estate of the country after obliterating three others."
He said the people must unite and put up a strong resistance against the current process of snatching their voting rights.
"Or else, people will remain deprived of their voting rights forever, and the country will be run by an illegal regime."
The BNP leader urged the people in all walks of life to work together to restore the rule of law and democracy in the country. "BNP will surely cooperate with you."
He said their party now has two main targets--freeing party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail, and compelling the government to hold the next polls under a non-party neutral administration.
