Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has alleged that the Election Commission (EC) is working as per a blueprint prepared by the government.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, at a press briefing in Naya Paltan, said: “The Gaziupur city corporation election is being held according to how the government wants. Irregularities have been reported in more than a hundred centres, while many BNP agents have been beaten up and driven out from different polling centres.”
Meanwhile, ruling party’s Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, at a press briefing at the Awami League president’s political office in Dhanmondi, claimed the BNP was deliberately making the allegations with a view to making both the government and election look dubious.
He said: “The election is ongoing in a fair atmosphere. But the BNP, again, is trying to make the election seem questionable.”
“There was no development during the tenure of the previous BNP-backed mayor, so people are spontaneously voting for Awami League.”
BNP is raising “false allegations” over the polls to cover up their internal conflicts as well as make the polls controversial, so that the non-democratic power could come in force, alleged Nanak.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi complained that there were already reports of alleged irregularities from more than a hundred polling centers.
He went on to claim that even though the CEC said it would be different from the Khulna city corporation election, so far it seemed like it had been how the government wanted it to be.
