EC: MPs can join city election campaigns

The approved proposals will soon be sent to the Law Ministry for vetting

Update : 24 May 2018, 05:13 PM

The Election Commission has amended the electoral code of conduct, allowing members of parliament to participate in campaigns during city elections.

The Commission’s secretary Helaluddin Ahmed disclosed this change to journalists following a meeting at its headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda presided over the meeting.

“As MPs do not hold any office of profit, the Election Commission has recommended they be excluded from the definition of "Very Important Person" (VIP),” Helaluddin said.

This will allow them to take part in electioneering, but they will not be able to use Circuit Houses at that time, according to the amended rules.

The approved proposals will soon be sent to the Law Ministry for vetting.
