After the High Court issued a stay order against the Gazipur City Corporation polls, the responses from the two leading parties have been polar opposites in terms of intensity.
BNP Joint General Secretary Moazzem Hossain Alal said immediate compliance with the High Court’s order was a sign of government conspiracy.
At the BNP office in Gazipur, Moazzem proceeded to decry the move and condemn the government.
He said: “We were about to harvest our sheaves of paddy. But the government must have chickened out after their spies told them that forging even 200,000-300,000 ballots would not help them secure victory. This is why the government has resorted to such vile tactics. We will fight it legally and we will fight with public support.”
SM Abul Kalam Azad, industry secretary for the Gazipur unit of BNP, said: “Awami League had to resort to lowly means to escape a shameful defeat in the polls. But we have full faith in the judiciary and hope to see the polls take place in time.”
In contrast, the only response appeared to have come from Hasan Mahmud, secretary of publicity and publications for the Awami League.
At the Dhanmondi Awami League office, he said: “The polls have been suspended over complications regarding the boundary. There is nothing we can do but wait for the court to resolve it. The judiciary is above any influence, it is independent, and there is no scope for the government to intervene here.”
Gazipur residents who were looking forward to the vote expressed their disappointment. Several of them shared a common sentiment: “They could have just gotten it over with. It all seemed so festive.”
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters at the Supreme Court that the government will consider whether to appeal against the court order after he receives a written copy of the order.
