BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said everyone has forgotten the famine during Awami League’s rule in 1974.
He made the comment on Thursday at the National Press Club lounge during a conference organized by the Association of Engineers of Bangladesh.
Fakhrul said: “Nobody talks about it anymore. But we remember how many dead bodies were lying in the streets. We remember people and dogs fighting over the same food from the dustbin. Amartya Sen said this famine was man-made. The 1974 famine was the fault of the government at the time.
“Awami League is not a role model. The banking system is extremely problematic right now. The economy is at risk. People are earning less.”
The top BNP leader spoke about the quota reform movement as well. He said: “The Prime Minister got angry and completely scrapped the quota system. The people who protested against the quota system were picked up by detectives. They had to be released because more students protested against this.”
He further said that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was unjustly sent to jail on false charges. Regarding the 2014 election, he said: “Awami League purposefully created an environment unsuitable for elections. Even Ershad did not want to participate in elections at that time; he was forced to do so.”This article was first published on banglatribune.com
