BNP sees trick in PM’s quota abolition announcement

Update : 12 Apr 2018, 06:21 PM
BNP has alleged that there is a trick in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's announcement of abolishing the quota system in public services as she did it out of anger. "The prime minister's announcement is contradictory to the constitution. There is a dirty trick in it," said Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday. The BNP senior joint secretary general made the remarks at a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters in Dhaka. In the wake of a nationwide movement by students and jobseekers, the prime minister on Wednesday announced that there would be no quota system in government jobs. Responding to her decision, Rizvi said the government had resorted to various evil designs to suppress the quota reform movement, which started in mid February. He alleged that the prime minister voiced her anger, annoyance and issued threats instead of giving directives to resolve the problem over the quota reforms. Rizvi also observed that the implementation of the prime minister's announcement was not an easy task as the apex court may revoke it if any petition was filed against it. "There is a clear provision of keeping quota in the constitution for underprivileged and ethnic minority communities," he said. The BNP leader said the students and jobseekers waged their movement for reform in quota system, not for its complete cancellation. "The prime minister made the entire nation disappointed through her decision." He added that the prime minister also did not take the students' demands into her consideration with an open mind. "The demonstrators did not oppose the quota for the children of freedom fighters, marginalized ethnic groups and physically challenged people,” Rizvi said.
