The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has denied the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) permission to hold its scheduled rally in Dhaka on Friday, urging the party instead to arrange an indoor program.
BNP Publicity Affairs Secretary Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Anee made the disclosure to the UNB after a meeting with the DMP officials on Thursday.
He said they had a long discussion with the DMP authorities over their program on Friday.
“The DMP authorities said they cannot allow us to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan as an Islamic party was earlier given permission to use the venue. They also urged us not to hold any program at Naya Paltan on the road halting traffic,” Anee said.
He further said the DMP had given the BNP some alternative proposals, such as holding an indoor program.
“They have also told us that they will allow us to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan at the end of January.”
The BNP leader said their party high command would now decide through discussions about Friday’s program to mark what they call the “Democracy Killing Day”.
BNP chairperson’s advisers Abdus Salam, Abul Khaier Bhuiyan and Anee went to the DMP commissioner’s office around 3pm, and had about an hour-long discussion on the party’s scheduled program.
On Monday, BNP announced to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan and bring out black flag processions across Bangladesh on January 5 in protest against the 10th parliamentary polls, which was held on the same day in 2014.
However, the party on Wednesday sought fresh permission from police and the Dhaka South City Corporation authorities to hold the program at Naya Paltan as an Islamic party took permission to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on the same day.
