Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday said his party will accept whoever the Rangpur city dwellers pick to lead them after the election.
“The initial results have indicated the Awami League will be defeated in the election but fair politics and democracy have won in this election,” Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges minister, said during a three-minute briefing at the party president’s office in Dhanmondi in the evening.
“Through this election, Awami League has proved that a fair and participatory election is possible with an administration that has Sheikh Hasina at the helm, and it was a message for BNP for the next general election,” he said.
Earlier in the day, dismissing BNP's allegations of irregularities in the Rangpur City Corporation election, Awami League Joint-General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok said that the opposition party is only trying to question the election as they know that they will definitely lose.

“Since morning, voters from all walks of life in Rangpur have cast their votes. We've gleaned information from the local level. Voters didn't make any complaints. BNP is questioning the election as this is an old habit of theirs,” said Nanok.
Nanok made the remarks at an earlier press briefing, also at the Awami League president’s office, in the afternoon.
He described BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi’s comments as “unfortunate.”
Presidium member and Agricultural minister Matia Chowdhury, joint-general secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanok, Dipu Moni and Abdur Rahman, organising secretaries Khalid Hasan Chowdhury and AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, as well as Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap were present at the press briefing, among others.
