The deadline set by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for investigating the attack on another party leader Monirul Islam Yusuf in an internal clash ended last Friday.
On November 10, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was tasked with leading the probe and taking appropriate measures. However, insiders claimed that party leaders concerned are yet to take any steps regarding the matter.
The Bangla Tribune has collected a copy of Mirza Fakhrul’s order for launching a probe.
According to the document, the BNP secretary general on November 10 directed the party’s senior joint secretary general to investigate and take necessary action over the matter within seven days.
However, BNP central office is yet to send a probe team to Mirsarai.
Nurul Amin, who is being accused as the mastermind of the attack, said the complaints against him were politically motivated.
“I was not in the area during the attack. I am being targeted because I am an accomplished politician,” said Nurul.
He also added that BNP central office had made no attempts to contact him over the matter, rather he contacted them and described what happened that day.
Responding to a query, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said he would conduct a thorough investigation before submitting a report.
Rizvi further said that it was an internal matter of the BNP and results would come out after the probe is finished.
The senior BNP leader acknowledged that the deadline given by the secretary general had passed but the report was still pending.
On the other hand, the victim of the attack, Monirul Islam declined to comment on the issue. “I have informed the party, and it will decide what to do about it [the attack],” he said.
Meanwhile, there are allegations that the party’s Chittagong divisional Organising Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim is pulling strings to protect ex-chairman of Mirsarai upazila Nurul Amin.
When approached for comment last Thursday, Shamim said: “I have no involvement in the matter, some youth from my area carried out the attack. A probe has been launched. Let us see what happens.”
Shamim confirmed that he did not receive orders to conduct a probe of the incident.
“I have not been contacted by the central over the matter, neither formally or informally.”
According to a senior leader of the BNP central committee, Nurul Amin has a track record of engaging in acts of violence.
“Nurul has ties with Jamaat-e-Islami. Backed by Jamaat, he is currently trying to influence the central leadership of BNP,” he added.
However, Nurul vehemently denied these allegations against him.
Chittagong district BNP organised a programme demanding release of the party’s joint secretary general and also the convener of the Chittagong north district unit Aslam Chowdhury on November 4.
Monirul Islam Yusuf attended the demonstration with hundreds of his followers.
Nurul Amin, convener of Mirsarai upazila unit of BNP, and his followers reportedly attacked Monirul at the programme.
Following the attack, a case was filed against Nurul Amin and 11 other people in the Chittagong kotwali police station.
