Ruling party Awami League has condemned the attacks on Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state of Myanmar.
"Although Bangladesh has been giving shelter to the Rohingyas for humanity's sake due to the aggravated situation in the Rakhine state, the country cannot afford to provide the shelter for long," Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said during a press briefing at the party president's Dhanmondi office on Tuesday.
He said: "Hundreds of Rohingya refugees are heading towards Bangladesh fleeing the fresh violence that has claimed the lives of around 100 Rohingyas and several security forces, in Myanmar's Rakhine State."
Referring to the recommendations by Kofi Annan's committee, Obaidul Quader urged Myanmar to immediately give citizenship to the Rohingyas resolving the problems.
The ruling party also decided to provide aid to the flood affected people.
"We have decided to instruct the party members to celebrate the Eid-Ul-Azha with the flood victims by providing all sorts of help," the minister added.
He also announced that a 28-member delegate of the party led by Lt Col (retd) Muhammad Faruq Khan will be visiting China from September 19 till September 29 following an invitation by Communist Party of China.
The party has also aimed to form a full committee of Moulvibazar Awami League unit within September this year.
