The death toll in Tuesday’s election-related violence reached 11, with the demise of an Awami League (AL) leader in Bogra and two people in Pirojpur yesterday.
Jabed Ali Bhuiyan, 40, an AL leader in Bogra, died yesterday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
According to local sources, Jabed Ali Bhuiyan and 10 others people were critically injured as supporters of BNP-backed candidate Abdul Majid attacked supporters of the AL-nominated candidate Golam Mustafa Tuku. Abdul Majid won the poll.
Jabed was taken to Jamalpur Sadar Hospital from where he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the Cox’s Bazar poll-related violence stands at three.
The deceased are Abdul Gafur, 38, Monir Ahmed, 30, and Shafiul Alam, 30.
A gunfight between supporters of the AL candidate and the rival aspirant left Shafiul Alam, 25, dead. Locals said the skirmish broke out when votes were being counted at Majherpara polling station at Shahfarid Dwip under Teknaf’s Shaparan union.
Shafik and 15 others were shot. He died while being taken to the hospital. Of the injured, Monir Ahmed and Shafiul Alam died at Cox’s Bazar Hospital yesterday morning.
In Sirajganj, a woman was killed in a clash between supporters of two UP candidates at Dhangara UP. She was the mother-in-law of Nawab Ali, who won the poll.
In Jhalakathi, a clash between rival candidates at the Sadar upazila’s Nabagram UP killed Abul Kashem Sikdar, 60, the brother of member candidate Chunnu Sikdar.
In Pirojpur, at least five were killed when Border Guard Bangladesh members opened fire on a group of people trying to snatch ballot boxes in the district’s Mathbaria upazila.
District Superintendent of Police Walid Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: “The incident took place after a group of people swooped on the BGB men while law enforcers were carrying the ballot boxes from the Safa Degree College polling centre at Dhonisafa union.
“In retaliation, the BGB members opened fire on the miscreants as per the directive given by Executive Magistrate Kazi Ziaul, leaving at least three people dead on the spot and several others injured.”
Later, two people died on the way to Barisal Medical College Hospital, said Mathbaria police station OC Khandaker Mostafizur Rahman.
Probe body formed over BGB firing in Pirojpur
A four-member probe body was formed yesterday to investigate into the killing of five people in the firing by Border Guard Bangladesh personnel at a Pirojpur polling centre on Tuesday.
The body led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Md Manik Rahman. Other members of the committee are Additional Police Super Md Abu Ashraf, Election Officer of Mothbaria upazila and Presiding Officer at Safa Degree College.
