BNP: Cancel polls at 50 union parisahds

Bringing allegation of irregularities, the BNP has urged the Election Commission to cancel voting at minimum 50 union parishads.

A BNP team led by party Vice Chairman Abdullah al Noman met CEC Kazi Rakubuddin Ahmad on Tuesday afternoon and made the demand.

The party also demanded reelection to the 50 union parishads.

Noman said: “Irregularities, vote rigging and casting fake votes took place in every polling centres in at least 50 union parishads.

“We just want that the Election Commission to make its activities trust worthy to the voters and it should cancel voting at 50 union parishads.”

The BNP leader also alleged that all the elections in the country are now becoming a joke to the voters.

"The BNP will always attend the elections to show the people what kinds of joke is happening around," he added.

Voting in the first phase election at 661 Union Parishads was held on Tuesday amid sporadic clashes, violence and reported rigging.

Voting began around 8am and continued till 4pm without a break.

In the first phase of the elections, 36,456 candidates – 3,034 for chairman posts, 25,847 for member posts and 7,575 for reserved-seat women posts – are contending for the aforementioned positions.

A total of 54 chairmen, 179 members and 54 reserved-seat women members have already been elected uncontested.
