The 11-member delegation led by party Chairperson Khaleda Zia reached Bangabhaban at 4:30pm and left the president’s residence around 5:45pm.
Standing Committee member Jamiruddin Sircar, who was part of the team, described the meeting as “successful,” and said that the president appeared responsive during the meeting.
Other members of the delegation were Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Moudud Ahmed, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mahbubur Rahman, Amir Khosru Mahmood Chowdhury and Nazrul Islam Khan.
BNP leaders Mirza Abbas and Torikul Islam did not participate despite being part of the delegation.
At the meeting, the BNP raised its proposals regarding the search committee and also recommended amendment to the RPO and strengthening the EC.
Secretary of the president’s office Sampad Barua, president’s Defence Secretary Maj Gen Sarwar Hossain and Press Secretary Md Joynal Abdin were present during the meeting.
While briefing reporters at the party’s Nayapaltan Headquarters, Mirza Fakhrul said that the BNP emphasised on keeping two former Supreme Court judges in the proposed four-member search committee.
“We want an Election Commission formed with the consent of all political parties. There is no alternative to this,” he said, adding that the president was very cordial during the long-awaited meeting.
On December 13, Bangabhaban announced that President Hamid would hold meetings with the country’s five leading registered political parties regarding the EC.
Fakhrul expressed hope that the president would discuss the BNP’s proposal during his meetings with other parties.
The BNP leader said that he was optimistic of seeing tangible results by mid-January.
Briefing reporters on Saturday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said: “Khaleda Zia will also discuss different political issues including arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance of BNP leaders and activists.”
Khaleda’s Adviser Khandaker Mahbub Hossain at the briefing said: “We will submit the names of four renowned citizens of the country to the president to be included in a search committee that will find out the next chief election comissioner.
“The four are former judges Justice Mahmudul Amin Chowdhury, Justice Syed ZR Mudassir Hossain, Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim and Justice ATM Afzal.”At the top of the agenda was the reconstitution of the Election Commission. The president indicated that the process would be concluded within a month.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said his party stressed the importance of having all political parties on the same page regarding the EC reconstitution during the meeting with the president.
He said the delegation was optimistic after the meeting.
