The BNP has received the confirmation from Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, to hold its sixth national council there on March 19.
BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement at a press briefing in the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital yesterday.
“We applied to three venues to hold our council. Last night [Wednesday], the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh authorities wrote to us confirming that they would allow us to hold the council there. They also informed about the rent of the venue,” Rizvi said.
He further said the party had withdrawn its application to the Public Works Department to use Suhrawardy Udyan for the council.
Asked about the police permission to hold the council, he said: “We have already informed police about the council; we will inform them again. According to the rule, in order to hold any meeting or rally, a party is required to take permission from the authorities concerned.”
The BNP initially had plans to hold the council At Bashundhara Convention Centre, but the convention centre authorities said they would not allow rent the venue for any political purpose.
Party charter stipulates that national councils should be held every three years, but the last council was on December 8, 2009.
At the last council, Khandaker Delwar Hossain was made the secretary general. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was made the party's acting secretary general after Delwar's death in 2011.
