The leaders have come down heavily on the high commission officials for not using the portrait of Bangabandhu in a banner celebrating the 46th Victory Day.
Awami League Senior leader and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Suranjit Sengupta had attended the ceremony as the chief guest.
The distinct lack of the photos of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led to a massive outcry among the ruling party ranks.
High Commission Press Minister Nadim Quadir said: “There is no precedence of using any photo of Bangabandhu in these programmes and this year was no different. There is no hidden agenda behind not using the his photo.
"The high commissioner represents Bangladesh, not any political party, and he did talk about the importance of Bangabandhu in our Liberation War.”
Jubo League UK unit Joint General Secretary Jamal Khan attended the event and went on to blame the high commissioner for the negligence, saying: “Md Nazmul Quaunine was appointed deputy high commissioner to London during the BNP regime. He is now implementing BNP-Jamaat agenda.”Chhatra League UK unit General Secretary Bhuiyan Sajib also chimed in: “We want to know the reason why Bangabandhu's picture was not on the banner and I demand an inquiry into the incident.”
UK AL Joint General Secretary Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury told the Bangla Tribune said: “A Victory Day event cannot be imagined without Bangabandhu's picture. The country's independence would have been impossible had this great leader not been there. Excluding his photo in such events is unacceptable.”
