Two students of Titumir College received injuries after they were allegedly attacked by activists of the college unit Chhatra League yesterday morning for protesting increase of tuition fees at the government institution.
The injured students Rahmat Ullah, 21, and Iazul Islam, 26, were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital following the incident.
When asked, protesters said they have been voicing against the tuition fee hike for the last few days. They claimed that they were attacked on Monday too by Chhatra League men, when they were protesting peacefully but fortunately no one received any major injuries.
They said students of other colleges have to pay Tk3,100 as yearly tuition fees but Titumir College authorities were demanding Tk4,217 from them. Moreover, admission fee of the college was Tk1,900 previously but now they are demanding Tk2,617, they alleged.
The students said they were protesting since the authorities increased the fees without any notice.
Jahirul Islam, one of the protesters, told the Dhaka Tribune that Chhatra League men started attacking them all of a sudden with sticks and sharp weapons when they were protesting peacefully, leaving at least five protesters injured.
Titumir College unit BCL President Kazi Mirazul Islam Dollar denied the allegation and said general students chased the protesters as they found the agitation illogical.
He claimed that the Chhatra League men were nowhere near the incident.
Meanwhile, Banani police arrested two Titumir students with lethal weapons after conducting a drive at the college’s Shahid Akkasur Rahman Akhi hall.
The arrested are Saidul Islam and Rezaul Karim. However, it could not be ascertained if they were members of Chhatra League.
Assistant Commissioner Rafikul Islam of Gulshan police zone said action has already been taken after being informed about the matter.
