Bangladesh National Alliance (BNA) Chairman Barrister Nazmul Huda has opined that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia should retire from politics.
Nazmul Huda, a former standing committee member of the BNP, quit the party a year ago and formed the BNA.
He said: "Khaleda Zia has been burdened by her family. And it is such a big responsibility to run a party like the BNP. She should take rest and quit politics."
He made the remarks in an exclusive interview with the Bangla Tribune, a sistern concern of the Dhaka Tribune, on Sunday.
Diarchy prevails in the BNP because of Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman, Huda claimed.
The BNA chairman continued that the party was itself responsible for its present misery and Khaleda herself ruined the atmosphere of dialogue with the government.
Barrister Nazmul Huda was known to be a close aide of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and was one of the party's 12 founding standing committee members.
He was elected to parliament on the BNP ticket several times and served as a minister in several BNP governments. He held important positions in the party but his relationship with the party became strained over time. Recently he formed the BNA, an alliance of 31 political parties.
Huda continued: "I think if she [Khaleda] retires, her son Tarique will likely take charge of the party properly. The existing dual rule and indecision are behind the current poor state of the party. The BNP leadership has failed despite its successes under the leadership of its founder Ziaur Rahman.”
Huda said the BNP has taken several bad decisions because one decision came from Khaleda and another from Tarique, who lives in the United Kingdom.
Tarique Rahman is the senior vice chairman of the party and the chairperson cannot ignore him because he is highly valued by the party, Huda said.
