Allegation game continues over NCC election

Ivy during an election rally said: “Shakhwat Hossain is not from Narayanganj. He is a hired candidate of the BNP.” On the day, Ivy, who is considered as the popular figure in Narayanganj politics, made the comments while campaigning at Wards 26 and 27. She said: “Nobody will be able to defeat boat [the electoral symbol of the ruling party Awami League]  in the city election. In the previous election, people of Narayangnaj elected me as a mayor. This time, they [city dwellers] are my only hope. “Shahkwat does not know anything about Narayanganj. He came to the city a few years back. I think he is a hired candidate.” Meanwhile, Shakhwat Hossain said the popularity of the BNP was increasing day by day and Awami League candidate Ivy had become worried sensing her defeat. The BNP candidate made the comment while addressing an election rally at Ward 18 in the city. He said: “Ivy demanded army deployment in the previous election. But now she does not want army because she knows Shamim Osman will her help to win the election.” The city will go to polls on December 22. As per the schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers was November 24, while the date for the scrutiny of the nomination papers was on November 26-27 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature was December 4. The election symbols were allocated among the contestants on December 5. The maiden election to NCC was held on October 30, 2011. Ivy was elected country’s first female city mayor defeating Awami League-backed candidate Shamim Osman. On Saturday, Election Commission after a meeting announced that army would not be deployed during the upcoming NCC election. The meeting was held at NEC auditorium in the city’s Sher-e Bangla Nagar area with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin in the chair, said EC Secretariat’s Assistant Secretary Rajib Ahsan yesterday.
