The Awami League has announced to observe January 5 as “Victory Day of Democracy” by carrying out rallies at 18 spots, including the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif made the announcement in a press conference at party president's Dhanmondi office on Sunday.
The rallies are set to be held in front of Purabi Cinema Hall at Mirpur 12, Shyampur-Jurain rail gate, Demra-Jatrabari ground, Badda-Rampura petrol pump, Dhanmondi 32, Mirpur 1 intersection, Lalbagh, Gulshan, Sutrapur, Tejgaon, Sabujbagh-Khilgaon, Uttara, Kamrangirchar, Mohammadpur Towen Hall, Kafrul, Bangabandhu Avenue in Gulistan and Suhrawardy Udyan.
“If we fail to get the permission of Dhaka Metropolitan Police for holding rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, we will hold the rally in front of our Bangabandhu Avenue's party office,” Hanif said.
Before speaking to the media, the ruling party held a joint meeting at the party's Dhanmondi office.
Earlier, the party sources told the Dhaka Tribune that the Awami League is planned to be in control of the streets in the capital on January 5, the second anniversary of the tenth general elections, like it did last year.
The BNP has already announced that it will hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on January 5, terming it the democracy killing day, but was yet to get the permission of Dhaka Metropolitan Police till Sunday evening.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said both the parties would not be allowed to hold programmes at the same venue on January 5.
However, he said nothing regarding issuing permission to any party.
On January 5 last year, members of the Awami League and its associate bodies gathered at 15 points in the capital to observe the “victory day for democracy” and resist counter programmes of the BNP.
