BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been served a legal notice asking her to issue 'unconditional apology' over her recent remarks on the 1971 martyrs.
Supreme Court Bar Association’s former general secretary Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi sent the notice Wednesday giving her seven days to issue the apology or face legal consequences.
Speaking at a discussion last Monday, Khaleda cast doubt about the number of people who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War in 1971, claiming the figure is disputed.
Momtaz said the BNP chairperson has made confusion about the number of the martyrs.
Besides, not mentioning the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Khaleda said he [Bangabandhu] did not want independence, rather wanted to be the prime minister of Pakistan.
“Her remarks are anti-state and unconstitutional. So, she has been asked to withdraw her remarks and seek unconditional apology within seven days. Otherwise, we will take necessary legal action against her,” the lawyer said.
He sent the notice to the former prime minister’s residence and at the BNP Headquarters in capital’s Nayapaltan by post.
