The senior leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party yesterday conducted electoral campaign at Sitakunda municipality in Chittagong in favour of the party nominated mayoral candidate.
During the mass contact, the top brass urged the residents of Sitakunda municipality to vote for the party nominated mayoral candidate Syed Abul Monsur.
This time, a total of 449 mayor and councillor aspirants are vying for the municipal polls slated for December 30. Of them, 34 are mayoral, 77 are in reserved seats for women and 338 are contesting as the general councillor candidates.
The 10 municipalities where the polls are going to be held are Sandwip, Banshkhali, Chandanaish, Satkania, Mirsarai, Patiya, Raozan, Rangunia, Baryarhat and Sitakunda.
Of the total 10 municipalities, BNP put its mayoral candidates out in the field in nine municipalities and left Chandanaish municipality for its alliance partner Liberal Democratic Party.
“A mass upsurge has created in the country in favour of the BNP. It is the responsibility of the ruling party and Election Commission to ensure the rights to exercise franchise. However, the rights have been trampled down in the hands of the ruling party. We will foil any evil motive to rob the rights to exercise franchise,” said Nasir Uddin, former minister, adviser to the BNP Chairperson and convener of Chittagong district municipal polls monitoring cell.
“The onus to ensure free, fair and credible municipal polls rests on the ruling party and the EC. The government is trying to annihilate BNP resorting to all sorts of evil plans. However, we should all stand alert and face the intimidation of the incumbent government,” said Aslam Chowdhury, convener of BNP Chittagong north district unit and member of the municipal polls monitoring cell formed by the party.
“We will give a fitting reply through winning in the forthcoming municipal polls,” added Aslam.
