‘Election Commission to ensure level-playing-field for all’

“A good number of RAB, BGB, police and Ansar members will be deployed during vote of Narayanganj City Corporation polls,” he said while talking to journalists after visiting several police centres yesterday. He said the election commission was committed to ensure level-playing-field for all mayoral and councillor candidates. Replying to a query over non-participation of followers of Shamim Osman, lawmaker for Narayanganj constituency 4, in election campaign, she said: “Do not create division among us [Amami League leaders and activists]. Fearing violation of electoral code of conduct, many top leaders of the party are not taking part in the campaign. I do not want to violate any rules.” During her campaign, she visited Kadamtali Gas Field, Panir Tank, College road, Dakshin Mijmiji, Kadam Tali Paschimpara areas. Meanwhile, BNP-backed candidate Shakhwat Hossain visited Mission Para, Don Chambar, Chashara and Amlapara areas and sought votes from  voters. As per the schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers was November 24, while the date for the scrutiny of the nomination papers on November 26-27 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature was December 4. The election symbols were allocated among the contestants on December 5. Of the main mayoral candidates, Ivy got boat, elctoral symbol of the ruling party Awami League, while Shakhwat received sheaf of paddy, symbol of the BNP. The maiden election to NCC was held on October 30, 2011. Dr Selina Hayat Ivy was elected country’s first female city mayor defeating Awami League-backed candidate Shamim Osman.
