The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld High Court's bail granted to BNP leader Shamsuzzaman Dudu in four violence cases and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi's bail in five similar cases.
However, the four-member bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha refused bail to Rizvi in one case after hearing the state’s petitions against bail in six of Rizvi’s cases and four of Dudu’s.
Lawyers Jainul Adedin, Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Sagir Hossain Leon represented the BNP leaders while Additional Attorney General Md Momtaz Uddin Fakir argued on behalf of the state.
Rizvi had secured interim bail from the HC in eight cases and Dudu in seven cases on July 7 this year. Following the HC order, state moved to the apex court.
Of the eight cases, two were filed with Jatrabari police station, three with Khilgaon, Mirpur and Mohammdpur and three with the Paltan police station. Bail in the case filed with Khilgaon police Station was stayed.
On the other hand, Dudu secured bail from HC in six cases filed with Paltan police station and one with Mirpur police.
Police arrested Rizvi on January 31 while Dudu was detained on January 12.
