Sujon: City polls disappointed people

Update : 25 May 2015, 07:31 AM

Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan), a civil society platform working for good governance, has observed that the elections to the three city corporations under Dhaka and Chittagong has disappointed the people of the country and raised questions in their minds.

Dilip Kumar Sarkar, coordinator of Sujan, made the statement in a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday.

He said: “The people of the country hoped the three city corporation elections would be held neutrally and it would solve the current political crisis. But they have been disappointed and the elections have raised questions in their minds.”

The platform prepared a report on the lack of educational qualifications and cases against the candidates of the city polls.

Earlier in a report, anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) said the recent elections to the three city corporations cannot be called free and fair.

The ruling Awami League backed-candidates swept the polls in the three city corporations, which were held on May 28 amid scattered incidents of vandalism and clashes.

Terming the city polls farcical, BNP rejected the polls in the three city corporations under Dhaka and Chittagong.
