BNP welcomes PM's statements

Update : 19 May 2015, 01:22 PM

Welcoming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's statement that her government wants peace, not confrontation, the BNP Tuesday urged the government to stop repressing the opposition and take initiative for talks.

“On Monday, honorable prime minister said they do not want confrontation; they want peace. We welcome her such attitude. BNP has always been against confrontational politics; it has favoured politics of compromise. We never allow bloodshed in politics,” Asaduzzaman Ripon, acting spokesperson of the party, said.

Addressing a press briefing at party's Nayapaltan headquarters, the BNP leader alleged that the government had snatched away political parties' constitutional rights to holding meetings and rallies.

“This sort of environment is barrier to good governance and democracy.”

Ripon urged the government to create a sound atmosphere for political activities.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said her government’s aim was to create, not to destroy, ensure peace, not to unleash confrontation, and steer the country towards development, not to destruction.

“We are running the state keeping this aim in our mind,” she said.

Ripon alleged that opposition leaders and activists were being repressed with the government filing false cases against the opposition men one after another.

“We hope that prime minister's statement will help eliminate vengeance of politics.

The international affairs secretary of the party demanded immediate and unconditional release of the detained BNP leaders and activists.
