Veteran journalist, poet, and long-time member of the National Press Club, Ershad Majumder, has passed away. He was 82.
He breathed his last at United Hospital in Dhaka at 11pm on Sunday.
Ershad Majumder had been battling age-related ailments, including diabetes and heart problems.
He is survived by his wife and two sons.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held at the National Press Club premises on Tuesday.
Born on January 6, 1942, in Majumdar Bari of Ukilpara, Feni, Ershad Majumder completed his education at Feni College, Jagannath College, and Dhaka College, graduating from Dhaka University in 1961.
He began his journalism career as an economic reporter at the then Pakistan Observer, becoming a pioneer in economic journalism in Bangladesh.
Over the years, he worked for notable newspapers, including Dainik Songbad, Purbadesh, Bangla Bani, and Janpad.
In 1978, Majumder became the editor-in-chief of Weekly Reporter, Dainik Fosal, and Daily Reporter.
Later, he served as managing editor at Dainik Songbad and The New Nation before retiring from journalism in 1998.
Ershad Majumder was also a prolific writer and translator. He translated the works of Rumi and Mansur Al-Hallaj and was instrumental in founding the Kavita Patra Parishad, a poetry organization for National Press Club members.
Majumder authored 14 books, including Mayer Chithi, Kalo Kobider Kobita, Dimer Khosay Pothchola, Atmar Sobdoboli, Dhakar Pachsho Bochor, 48 Number Topkhana Road, among others.
His literary works spanned stories, novels, poetry, and memoirs, with a distinctive contribution to cultural and historical narratives.
National Press Club President Hasan Hafeez and General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan expressed deep sorrow over his demise.
In a joint statement, they prayed for the departed soul and extended condolences to his grieving family.
Ershad Majumder’s legacy as a journalist and poet will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
