Azmal Hossain Khadem, former president of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) and a distinguished journalist, passed away early Tuesday morning at a hospital in Dhaka. He was 76 years old.
According to family sources, Khadem breathed his last at 12am while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the Tejgaon area of the city.
His funeral will take place on Tuesday, following a namaz-e-janaza at Banani Mosque after the Zuhr prayers. He will be buried at Banani Graveyard.
Khadem is survived by three daughters, grandchildren, numerous relatives, and well-wishers. Two of his daughters are currently in the United Kingdom.
Born in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria in 1948, Khadem had a long and illustrious career in journalism.
He worked with the then Banglar Bani and gained fame for presenting Sangbad Probaho, a popular news review program broadcast on Radio Bangladesh in the 1980s.
The program, which aired nightly at 9pm, was a significant feature in Bangladeshi media.
In 1998, Azmal Hossain Khadem was elected president of DRU. He was also a permanent member of several journalists’ organizations, including the National Press Club.
Press Club President Poet Hasan Hafiz, General Secretary Aiyub Bhuiyan, DRU President Syed Sukur Ali Shuvo, and General Secretary Mohiuddin Ahmed expressed their profound shock and sorrow at Khadem’s passing.
In their separate condolence messages, they sought eternal peace for his soul and extended deep sympathy to his bereaved family.
