Veteran student leader Shafi Ahamed dies

  • Died of heart attack in his sleep in the afternoon
  • Served as central general secretary of JaSod Chhatra League in 1990s

A veteran student leader Shafi Ahamed died at his residence in Dhaka on Monday afternoon. He was 62.

Shafi Ahmed's wife Tahera Khandaker confirmed the information.

Tahera said that he died of a heart attack in his sleep in the afternoon. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

In a statement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the death of the veteran leader.

She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Shafi Ahamed served as the central general secretary of the JaSod Chhatra League during the student movement in the 1990s. He was a student of the law department at Dhaka University and later joined the Awami League.

He held the position of assistant secretary in the Awami League Central Committee and subsequently became a member of the party’s sub-committee on the Liberation War.

Shafi Ahamed was nominated by the Awami League for the Netrakona-4 seat in the cancelled 2007 election. He sought the party’s nomination in the last four parliamentary elections but was not selected. In the twelfth parliamentary election held in January 2024, he ran as an independent candidate but could not vote as his nomination papers were cancelled.
