Advocate Ghulam Arieff Tipoo, chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal and a Language Movement veteran, has passed away.
He breathed his last on Friday at around 8am while undergoing treatment at the capital's Labaid Hospital.
His daughter Dalia said her father had just turned 93. “He had been suffering from age-related complications for a long time. As per the family's decision, he will be buried at the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard.”
In 1952, the Bangla Language Movement was mainly organized under his leadership in Rajshahi. He served as joint convener of the Rajshahi region unit of the Rashtrabhasha Sangram Parishad (National Language Action Committee).
He was honoured with the Ekushey Padak in 2019 for his role in the Language Movement.
Born on August 28, 1931, in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj, Ghulam Arieff Tipoo cleared his secondary school exams from Kaliarhar School in 1948 and his higher secondary school exams from Rajshahi College in 1950.
After graduating from Rajshahi College in law, he enrolled at Dhaka University for his post-graduation degree.
He served as general secretary of the Bangladesh Students' Union from 1954 to 1956.
Ghulam Arieff Tipoo began his career in law in 1958.
He served as the Rajshahi Bar Council president, Rajshahi University senate and syndicate member, and Bangladesh Bar Council member.
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan expressed grief at the death of Ghulam Arieff Tipoo.
In a condolence message on Friday, he sought forgiveness for the departed soul and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.
