Matia Chowdhury elected as deputy leader of parliament

The post fell vacant after the death of veteran politician Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury

Matia Chowdhury, a presidium member of the ruling Awami League and lawmaker for the Sherpur-2 constituency, has become the deputy leader of parliament, a post that fell vacant after the death of Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury.

President Abdul Hamid has recognized Matia Chowdhury as the deputy leader. 

Parliament Secretariat Senior Secretary KM Abdus Salam issued a notification in this regard on Tuesday.

Earlier on Thursday, the decision was taken at a meeting of the Awami League parliamentary party at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office with Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Matia is a five-time MP from Sherpur-2 and has served several ministries in different Awami League governments.

Sajeda Chowdhury was appointed as the deputy leader of the 11th parliament for the third consecutive term. She died on September 11 last year.
