A BNP lawmaker has called for action against the Dhaka Boat Club where an attempt to rape and murder Dhallywood actress Pori Moni allegedly took place at the club a week ago.

Chapainawabganj 3 MP Harunur Rashid made the demand during a discussion on the passing of the Child Day Care Center Bill-2021 in parliament on Wednesday. He was proposing amendments to the draft law.

"An incident occurred some days ago… action must be taken against the boat club. It has also been spreading on social media that the boat club was built on a piece of occupied land on the banks of the Turag River. The inspector general of police is its president,” he said.

"Women's employment has increased. But how safe is their way to work? Rapes are happening on the way. The state has to send a strong message against this. It is said that when women go to clubs it is bad. But it’s not bad for men? Women are marked as bad when they consume alcohol, isn't it bad for men also? It is Haram for both," Harun added.

His remarks came in the wake of actress Pori Moni's allegation that she survived a rape and murder attempt at that club in Uttara on the night of June 8.

Revealing the identity of the alleged assaulter as businessman Nasir U Mahmood at a press briefing on Sunday, the actress had claimed that she did not get any help from police and demanded justice.

On Monday, she filed a case against Nasir and 5 others at Savar police station over attempted rape and murder charges. Nasir and four others were arrested from Uttara later that day. Police have been ordered to submit the probe report in this case on July 8.

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent the five arrestees into police remand in a narcotics case filed over the banned yaba pills and alcoholic beverages seized during their arrest.

MP Harun on Wednesday, regarding the death of college student Mosarat Jahan Munia, also told parliament: “Munia was a victim of adultery. Who did it? What action has the prime minister taken? People from high society are involved in this. They must be strictly brought to book.”

On April 26, police had recovered Munia’s body hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom at a posh Gulshan flat. Her legs were touching the bed and both knees were a little bent.

The next day, her family sued Bashundhara Group MD Sayem Sobhan Anvir, accusing him of abetting Munia’s death by suicide.

The BNP lawmaker had also demanded justice for Pori Moni and Munia while addressing the House on Monday.
