Naogaon University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Hasanath Ali has warned that no form of ragging will be tolerated on campus, particularly under the pretext of teaching manners to junior students.
He said senior students could treat their juniors to ice cream or cake and build friendships with them, but harassing or intimidating them in the name of teaching manners would invite strict disciplinary and legal action.
“I will not allow any junior student to become a victim of ragging. Those involved will face action, including cancellation of their studentship and legal proceedings, if necessary,” he said, reaffirming the university's zero-tolerance policy on ragging.
The vice-chancellor made the remarks at a programme marking the completion of the first-semester courses for students of the Law and Accounting departments on Sunday afternoon.
Prof Hasanath said the university aimed to become a quality institution and a model for other universities across the country.
He said the university had a digital library to facilitate research and urged faculty members to continue their research activities, assuring them of all necessary support from the administration.
He said the university needed to make significant progress by 2027 in land acquisition, land development, construction of boundary walls and the development of five specialised buildings.
He also urged the government to approve the Development Project Proposal (DPP) submitted by the university, expressing hope that the project would be approved soon to help fulfil the aspirations of the people of Naogaon.
Expressing confidence in government support, he said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman regularly enquired about the university's progress. He also acknowledged the role of university syndicate member Mir Shah-e-Alam in following up on its development.
Prof Hasanath said the university was gradually moving forward to fulfil its commitments to the people of Naogaon.
Among others, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohammad Tarikul Islam, Kahaloo Upazila Nirbahi Officer Maliha Khanam, Accounting Department lecturer Sanjida Kabir and Law Department lecturer Zahidul Islam Sourav attended the programme.
