An indefinite road blockade in Sajek, Rangamati’s Baghaichhari upazila, entered its fifth day on Monday, disrupting tourism and bringing tourism-dependent businesses to a standstill.
The popular Sajek Valley remains closed to tourists as authorities seek to resolve the crisis through talks with local leaders.
A meeting between a three-member committee and local headmen and karbaris began at the Baghaichhari Upazila Parishad at 11am.
The blockade was jointly organised by the Sajek Public Rights Protection Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association to press five demands, including the withdrawal of armed members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS), led by Santu Larma, from Sajek and ensuring the security of local residents.
The protesters have also demanded punishment for those involved in attacks on demonstrators, withdrawal of cases, compensation for traders affected by vandalism and looting at Ujho Bazar, and coverage of medical expenses for injured people.
Their other demands include the withdrawal of army and police personnel from Ujho Bazar, an end to violence, extortion and harassment in Sajek, and a halt to arrests, harassment and searches of protesters’ homes and businesses.
On Sunday, an emergency meeting at the Rangamati deputy commissioner’s office decided to form a three-member committee to negotiate with the protesters. Monday’s meeting in Baghaichhari followed that decision.
The suspension of tourist visits has raised concerns over financial losses for resorts, cottages, transport operators and other tourism-related businesses.
The Rangamati district administration announced on October 22 that tourist visits to Sajek would remain suspended until further notice.
Although no protesters were seen at several points along the roads, law enforcement personnel were patrolling key locations.
Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib said the situation was under control and that efforts were underway to resolve the crisis through discussions.
No final decision on the protesters’ demands or the withdrawal of the blockade had been announced by on Monday afternoon.
