Tourists staying in Sajek have been urged to leave the area by Wednesday as the Sajek Gono Odhikar Rokkha Committee and Sajek Karbari Association have announced a fresh road blockade from Thursday over the non-implementation of their three-point demands.

The announcement was made in a joint statement issued around 4pm on Wednesday by Sajek Karbari Association President Notun Joy Chakma and Sajek Gono Odhikar Rokkha Committee Convener Babudhan Chakma.

The blockade had been suspended from Friday to Wednesday at the request of the Durga Puja celebration committees of Baghaichhari and Machalong markets to allow the Hindu community to celebrate its largest religious festival.

The two organizations initially enforced an indefinite road blockade on October 11. The programme was later relaxed twice following assurances from the administration.

However, the groups have announced a fresh blockade, saying their three-point demands remain unfulfilled.

According to the joint statement, emergency vehicles, including fire service vehicles, ambulances and hearse vans, will be exempt from the blockade. Vehicles carrying emergency medicine supplies and newspapers, as well as those used by journalists for news gathering, will also be allowed to pass.
