Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan has said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken charge of Bangladesh at a critical juncture in its history with a mandate from the people, pledging to advance the country on the path of democracy and restore people’s rights.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after paying tribute to the martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar on Saturday.

Regarding the induction of new members into the cabinet, Dr Moyeen Khan said the move was part of a normal process following the formation of the cabinet six months ago. “Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken charge of the country with the votes of millions of Bangladeshis. After 17 years of authoritarian rule, he has dedicated himself to advancing Bangladesh towards democracy and establishing the rights of the people.”

He further said the cabinet expansion was aimed at addressing the country’s challenges and making Bangladesh a more dynamic state. “The prime minister is fully aware of the problems and issues facing Bangladesh. This initiative has been taken to resolve those problems, make Bangladesh a dynamic state and restore the country’s reputation in the global community,” he added.

Referring to the declaration of independence by BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, Dr Khan said Ziaur Rahman made the declaration from the Kalurghat Radio Centre at a critical moment when the nation was facing uncertainty.

He stressed the need to present such historical events to the younger generation, saying Bangladesh’s democratic journey had been disrupted repeatedly and that the BNP had consistently worked to restore democracy.

The minister also highlighted the political role of former BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, saying she established herself as an uncompromising leader during the political crisis of the 1980s and was elected Bangladesh’s first female prime minister through a popular vote in 1991.
