The upazila administration of Basail in Tangail has returned more than Tk 1.25 crore to the state treasury after completing a portion of the Sundari Canal re-excavation project while maintaining quality standards and ensuring efficient use of public funds.
According to the Basail upazila administration, Tk 14,35,52,708 was allocated for the re-excavation of a 4.2-kilometre stretch of the Sundari Baik Canal, running from Habla Uttarpara to Aroha Jiboneshwar through Choyshat Bill.
After completing 1.6 kilometres of excavation in line with the required technical standards, Tk 1,25,42,976 of the allocated funds remained unused. The amount was later deposited into the state treasury in accordance with government regulations.
The restoration of the canal has improved water flow and irrigation facilities, creating new opportunities for local farmers to cultivate three crops a year. As part of environmental conservation efforts, the administration also planted 100 saplings of various species along the canal embankment.
The project was supervised by Basail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Iqbal Hossain, Project Implementation Officer Saiful Islam, and Upazila Engineer Kazi Fattahur Rahman.
UNO Md Iqbal Hossain said the project was implemented while maintaining quality standards and ensuring the proper use of public resources. He added that the unspent Tk 1,25,42,976 had been returned to the state treasury in line with government rules.
The UNO expressed hope that the canal’s restoration would continue to benefit local farmers and support agricultural development in the area for years to come.
