A bulldozer driver and his assistant were injured when an eviction drive by the Roads and Highways Department came under attack in the Dhulivita area of Dhamrai upazila on the Dhaka–Aricha Highway on Tuesday.
The incident occurred while authorities were removing illegal structures built on the sidewalk. The drive was later suspended following the attack.
Officials said the eviction operation, which is carried out periodically to clear roadside encroachments, had been underway for about an hour when a group of local shopkeepers allegedly attacked the excavation vehicle with bricks and stones, injuring the driver and his assistant. Their identities were not immediately known.
The injured were taken to hospital, while the operation was halted temporarily. Authorities said the drive would resume in phases.
Hawkers, however, claimed the eviction was conducted without prior notice, which led to tension in the area.
Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Nayarhat branch of the Roads and Highways Department, Noor Alam Siddique, said the operation was part of routine enforcement against illegal encroachments.
