A man accused in multiple criminal cases was beaten and hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Riyaz Hossain, 29, a resident of Dhalirgati village.
According to police, Riyaz was facing several criminal cases, including those related to robbery, mugging, and drug offenses.
Abhaynagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nuruzzaman said the attack took place around 1:30am at the playground of Dhalirgati Government Primary School. A group of assailants allegedly beat him and attacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and took Riyaz to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Dr Mohammad Sabuj, a medical officer at the health complex, said Riyaz was brought to the hospital around 2:30am in a dead state.
"He had severe injuries on his head and different parts of his body. Excessive bleeding is believed to have caused his death," the doctor said.
Police and local residents said Riyaz was known in the area for his alleged involvement in criminal activities and had links to drug-related crimes.
Police completed the inquest report and were preparing to send the body to Jessore General Hospital morgue for an autopsy when this report was filed.
Law enforcers have launched an operation to identify and arrest those involved in the killing, while legal proceedings are underway, the OC added.
